Sony/Columbia Music approached us with a request to produce a video for British singer-songwriter James Arthur. The goal was to create a memorable cover of Christina Perri’s classic hit, "A Thousand Years," with a live performance feel that would resonate with his global fanbase. Our objective was to create an intimate, authentic video that would elevate the song and connect emotionally with listeners worldwide.

 

In this case study, we will detail the strategy and execution of the video production, the challenges we overcame, and the exceptional results that far exceeded expectations, including millions of views and viral success in South East Asia.

 

The Brief

 

James Arthur, known for his soulful voice and emotive performances, was set to cover the iconic ballad "A Thousand Years." The song’s themes of love and longing demanded a deeply personal and genuine performance. Sony/Columbia Music wanted a video that could encapsulate this emotional depth, delivering a warm, live feel.

The creative direction we pitched:

Our challenge was to execute this vision while ensuring that the video had the potential to captivate a global audience across multiple platforms, from YouTube to TikTok.

Execution: Creating the Perfect Atmosphere

1. Location Scouting and Preparation

We knew the location was crucial to achieving the warm, inviting aesthetic requested by Sony/Columbia. After scouting several venues, we decided to shoot at a recording studio in West London. This location not only had the necessary acoustic qualities but also provided the perfect backdrop with its rustic, homely interior. The space felt personal, almost like a cosy living room, which helped to create the intimate vibe we wanted.

2. The Live Feel

To capture the genuine emotion of a live performance, we took the approach of having the entire band perform together in one room, playing in real-time alongside James Arthur. This setup was pivotal in creating the energy of a live concert, where the chemistry between musicians adds a layer of depth to the performance.

  • We used warm, natural lighting to give the room a soft, welcoming glow, enhancing the emotional warmth of the song.

  • Minimalist camera angles and smooth transitions allowed the focus to remain on James Arthur’s vocal performance, showcasing his raw talent.
